In their latest work, MACADAM, Derby Derby continue the dance they began in their first album, Love Dance, immersing the listener into a continuous, kaleidoscopic soundscape.
The music centres around three clearly identifiable pathways, defined by the two rhythmic patterns of Sylvain Didou’s bass and Fabrice L’Houtellier’s drums, within which the thick layering of Alan Regardin’s electric trumpet adds a constantly evolving vibration.
The ear is deceived in the same way as eyes perusing one of Escher’s trompe l’oeil works, searching for the start and end of the pattern but constantly disoriented by the interjection of ever- moving sounds and tiny pattern changes that, in turn, transform the other elements within the musical architecture.
The texture from multiple trumpet layers creates a multitude of micro-vibrations, which sometimes feel like meta-melodies, rooted in the oscillations of the sonic spectrum in a physical relationship with sound. The coming together of high- frequency sounds opens up an unexpected dissonance and intimate, scintillating voices.
Somewhere between rhythmic energy and the illusion of stillness that reveals itself to be the anchor point for infinitely renewable details, MACADAM invites the listener into a deceptively simple listening experience. (Matthieu Prual)

Avec ce nouvel opus MACADAM, Derby Derby continue la danse commencée dans son premier album Love Dance, et plonge l’ auditeur dans un univers sonore kaléidoscopique et continu.
La musique s’articule autour de trois voies clairement identifiables, celles des deux motifs rythmiques tenus par la basse de Sylvain Didou et la batterie de Fabrice L’ Houtellier, à l intérieur desquels l’ épaisseur des nappes de trompette électrifiées d’Alan Regardin installe une vibration constante en perpétuelle mutation.
L’ oreille navigue en trompe l'œil, à la manière d’un regard parcourant une œuvre d' Escher, cherchant le début et la fin du motif, constamment déséquilibrée par l’interpénétration des objets sonores en mouvement, par les infimes changements d’un des pattern, qui transfigure alors par sa mutation les autres éléments de l’architecture musicale. La texture des trompettes démultipliées crée une multitude de micros vibrations, parfois perçues comme des méta- mélodies, ancrées dans l’oscillation du spectre sonore, dans un rapport physique au son. Les rencontres de fréquences dans le haut du spectre ouvrent des diaphonies imprévisibles, des chants intimes et scintillants.
Quelque part entre une énergie rythmique et une illusion de fixité qui se révèle comme le point d'ancrage d’une écoute du détail renouvelable à l'infini, MACADAM offre à l’auditeur une expérience d’une trompeuse simplicité. (Matthieu Prual)
